Integrative Oncology Featured at ASCO Annual 2011 Meeting

Integrative oncology research and discussions will be featured prominently during the ASCO 2011 Annual Meeting this weekend in Chicago, with several presenters among Society for Integrative Oncology leadership.

After many years advocating for integrative oncology research to be presented at the meeting, I am pleased to note that evidence-based complementary interventions are becoming part of the vanguard for oncology care, driven be consumer demand and a growing science base.

The buzz around ASCO this year is personalized oncology, an evolution of advancements in genetic and molecular diagnostics, epigenetics, proteomics, next generation of monoclonal-antibodies, other targeted therapies and more.  Let there be no doubt, evidence-based integrative medicine/oncology is personalized medicine.

1. Critically review dietary and micronutrient data in the oncology literature

2. Understand current data on the relationship between caloric intake, fat intake and cancer risk.

3. Understand current data on the association of supplements and cancer incidence, and their potential use as prevention agents.

4. Review the interaction between diet, micronutrients, and supplements and cancer therapies.

5. Discuss evidence-based use of other integrative therapies in the management of cancer patients.

I am a board member and will be manning the booth.  We will be introducing the Eighth International SIO Conference in Cleveland this fall, which will feature a keynote from NIH Director Francis S. Collins, MD, PhD, who will speak about Body, Mind and Spirit in Oncology.  Registration opened this week.

Next week FON will publish a post called Leveraging the Science, which is all about the growing science base that supports integrative medicine/oncology interventions, and how centers need to start communicating these findings internally and externally to grow clinic utilization.
